Kazuyo Sejima

Kazuyo Sejima (b. 1956, Ibaraki Prefecture, Japan) is one of the most influential architects of her generation. After training under Toyo Ito, she opened her own studio in 1987 and, in 1995, co-founded SANAA with Ryue Nishizawa. The Tokyo-based practice is celebrated for buildings defined by transparency, lightness, and a fluid relationship between architecture and its surroundings — among them the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art in Kanazawa, the New Museum in New York, the Rolex Learning Center in Lausanne, and the Louvre-Lens in France. In 2010, Sejima and Nishizawa received the Pritzker Architecture Prize, and in 2025 Sejima was awarded the RIBA Royal Gold Medal. She has taught at Princeton, Keio, and the Politecnico di Milano, and continues to shape a generation of architects through both her built work and her teaching.
