Winy Maas

Winy Maas (b. 1959, Schijndel, Netherlands) is a founding partner of MVRDV, the Rotterdam-based architecture, urbanism, and landscape studio he established in 1993 with Jacob van Rijs and Nathalie de Vries. Trained as a landscape architect before completing his studies at TU Delft, Maas has built a career around data-driven, experimental approaches to density, sustainability, and urban life. His work includes Rotterdam’s Markthal, the Tianjin Binhai Library, the Depot Boijmans Van Beuningen — the world’s first publicly accessible art depot — and the mixed-use tower Valley. Beyond practice, Maas has served as urban supervisor for Almere and Eindhoven, and holds professorships at TU Delft and MIT. He has received the Chevalier de la Légion d’Honneur and was appointed to the Order of the Dutch Lion, in recognition of a body of work defined by research, experimentation, and a consistent advocacy for greener, denser, more liveable cities.
