Pedro Reyes
Pedro Reyes (b. 1972, Mexico City) has won international acclaim for large-scale projects addressing social and political issues through sculpture, performance, and activism. His practice explores how collective organization can drive change with creativity and humor. Notable works include Palas por Pistolas, melting firearms into shovels to plant trees, and the Disarm series, transforming confiscated guns into musical instruments. His project Sanatorium, a clinic for urban malaise, was shown at the Guggenheim, dOCUMENTA 13, and Whitechapel Gallery. Reyes also created Doomocracy with Creative Time and led the global anti-nuclear campaign Amnesia Atómica ZERO NUKES. Alongside his social practice, he creates monumental stone sculptures in volcanic rock and marble, balancing figuration and abstraction while referencing Greco-Roman statuary, British Modernism, and Mesoamerican sculpture.
